Our efforts resulted in the creation of the iLIGHT Hair Removal System, an FDA-cleared light-based device that effectively removes unwanted body hair using IPL technology.
Like other light-based hair removal technologies, IPL works on the principle of Selective Photothermolysis. When the device applies a special pulse of light energy to the skin, the melanin within the hair shaft absorbs the light, converting it to heat.
The heat targets the root, disabling the hair’s growth mechanism, and within 1-2 weeks treated hairs start to fall out. Unlike most at-home hair removal methods, iLIGHT does not cut or pull out the hair—it works below the surface of the skin to disable active hairs and break the cycle of hair growth.

Beginning in 2004, a team of world-class physicians, scientists, engineers, regulatory specialists, and technology entrepreneurs came together for a venture that dramatically advanced light-based hair removal sciences.
Understanding that its core competencies lay in the research and development of these cutting edge technologies, Shaser licensed the advances in 2010 to global personal care giant Spectrum Brands, Inc., owner of the Remington brand. Uniting these leaders in their respective fields led to unprecedented success, including outselling all other light-based hair removal systems throughout Europe shortly after debuting.
Then in 2011, Shaser became one of the few global companies to receive clearance from the FDA to market over-the-counter photoepilation technology directly to US consumers. After several successful years as licensing partners, Spectrum Brands acquired a majority stake in Shaser Bioscience in 2012, giving Spectrum full access to Shaser’s team and extensive product roadmap.
Having sold more than 350,000 units worldwide, Shaser continues to break ground in the home-use aesthetic device market, which is expected to grow to over $1.3B in 2014 and even higher in subsequent years. Beyond its aggressive US and European agendas, it is currently pursuing substantial growth within significant Latin American markets including Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia.
